Solar Panels and Pigeons

As our climate changes, homeowners are sometimes looking for new technology to help lessen their environmental footprint. We see that with solar panels being installed onto residential roofs. This is a great way for homeowners to help collect energy for their homes, but it’s also the perfect spot for pigeons. They too have adapted to this new way of life and as a result, our pest control industry is also developing solutions.

Solar panels have become the perfect breeding and resting area for pigeons. The three to four inches under the solar panels provide protection from all of the elements and predators while also anchoring their nesting material in place. Pigeons love a good view to help them scout out food and water. They also enjoy the open space aspect of the roof, which is important for this social bird. The pigeon is not a highly skilled nesting bird, as the nests are often poorly constructed with a few sticks tossed together to hold the eggs. So the solar panel is crucial to keeping the eggs in place and shielding it from weather and predators.

The major concern of having a large group of pigeons residing on a residential roof is the waste produced is highly acidic and can corrode roofing material, metals, and stone. The solar panels, roof shingles, underlay, and other products can be severely damaged as the waste of the bird accumulates both on top and below. Their nests can create hot spots under the panel and you can experience performance issues as a result. The longer the problem persists, the harder it is to clean and repair the damage caused. As more pigeons flock, other areas of the home will also be covered in waste including decks, railings, windows, etc. It has the potential to also travel into HVAC and other ventilation systems. Pigeon waste is not safe, it is linked to three human diseases for respiratory and other health-related issues.

All that being said, the best solution is prevention! Ideally, when a solar panel is installed onto a roof, immediately after a solar panel guard is also installed to create a barrier around the gap opening underneath. This is a highly effective tool to deter birds from resting on the roof and using the solar panels as a nesting ground. A cost-effective solution that requires no cleanup or disinfection.  If the problem has already started, we can also work to help clean up the waste and install the guard so that further damage is prevented.
