Getting Rid of A Rodent Infection By Yourself – Some Pest Control DIY Tips

Seeing a single rodent may seem cute, however, if you see one, the chances are that there is an entire swarm of rodents resting in your house. They can breed fast and spread in numbers. If you allow just one of them to get in and survive, you will soon be seeing dozens of them roaming around in a matter of days. If they start nesting, then it is a full-blown war to try to get them out.

Living with a rodent isn’t just inconvenient or mortifying, it is dangerous for health. While they are roaming around your house, they use urine as a mode of communication and are spilling their germs all over. This can lead to diseases and major health problems. Rodents are also known to gnaw on wires, that can lead to complete electrical catastrophe.

While a may find a single stray rodent cute but if you start hearing them at night, trouble has escalated! They are in your walls, and it is time for you to take some action. However, I am an animal lover, and I cannot suggest killing them or hurt them in any way. The following are simple ways you can get rid of the mice and carry out effective rodent control without hurting them.

#1 Make Your Home Rodent-Free

To prevent a rodent infestation, a better approach is never to allow the infestation to happen in the first place. Most rodents find their ways in houses during the winter looking for food and shelter. The following list discusses how to make your home rodent-free with mice exterminators.

If there are trees near your house, make certain to cut down the branches so the branches cannot they be used as a bridge for the rodent to get in your home. All they need is an opening in your roof or attic, and they will manage to get in.

You also need to look closely for any holes or gaps in walls that rodents can crawl through. If you find the holes, seal them shut. A rodent can pass through smallest of holes so do not leave any opening no matter how small it seems.

Seal all the windows using weather-stripping to prevent access to the rodent.

Rodents are in search of food, and a trash bin is a good source as any, you have to make sure all trash cans are away from your house.

Check all vulnerable areas such as old storage boxes, the insides of your walls or any other place that they can get in and rest and go on for nesting. Try to check for all interior areas where they can settle.

#2 Use Smells that are Nauseous for Rodent

Look out for the smell that rodents truly despise. This include garlic smells, spicy smells, and rodent detests peppermint. Rodents like mice have a sharp sense of smell, and if these smells are around each corner and opening in your house, the good chances are that these rodents will look the other way. This is one way to pursue pest control. Get some soft cotton balls and peppermint oil.

Any area where you feel there is a risk of a rodent getting in, soak the cotton balls with peppermint oil and place at all such positions where there is a rodent threat. This will not kill the rodent, and these cotton balls and peppermint oil will do no harm to your pets and children.

However, along with these measures you must also shut off all openings in the house as mice and other rodents may find a way around the smell and get in through any opening you left unattended.

#3 Keep Your House as Tidy as you Can

Rodents love a home that is in bad condition. If there is filth lying around your house, it is like giving an open invitation to these rodents. Clear the mess and dirt from around your house. Give more attention to places like attics and closets and clean them regularly. Keep all food item and leftovers in sealed jars, preferably airtight containers.

Also, replace your regular trash bags with metal containers. A garbage bag can feed mice forever as they can survive on mere grams of feed each day. Do not leave any crumbs of foods lying around that they can get by with.

#4 Use Rodent Traps that are not Lethal

A kind alternative to conventional mice traps and toxic glue cages are the traps that are not lethal. These traps are to catch the mice, but the intent is not to kill or hurt them. Most of these traps are design using confined spaces where a rodent gets lured in using a bait. As the rodent gets in the rodent has no way to escape the trap, and the mice are safely removed from your house.

You can find many options for bait including chocolate, bread crumbs, or even peanut butter to lure them into the trap. The best place to keep these traps are areas where you see or suspect the rodent activities. This method is perfect to catch a rodent or few, however, if you fear a rodent infestation this approach might not work.

When you trap them, you will have to release them at least half a mile from your house, or else they will make their way back to your home. This approach requires more effort than to kill the rodent. However, this is humane and will not harm the rodent.

These traps work fine and will trap many of them. You can get more of these traps if you are looking to end a full-blown infestation.

#5 Cover Certain Locations of Your House with Aluminum Foil

Aluminum foil is like “kryptonite” to rodents. They find something repulsive in aluminum foil, and they keep a distance from aluminum foil. A foil may serve as a perfect deterrent. However, it is not practical to spread foil everywhere in your house.

Instead, use the foil only in those areas where the highest activity is present. Covering all your leftovers with aluminum foils is a good idea to keep the rodents away.
